ALAN R. PEARLMAN FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES GIVING TUESDAY INDIEGOGO CAMPAIGN KICKOFF

Press release follows.

The Foundation Announces the First Publicly-Accessible ARP 2500 in the USA

STONE RIDGE, NY, November 28, 2023: Thanks to a generous donation by former ARP employee Bruce McLendon, the Alan R. Pearlman Foundation is welcoming a 2508 Wing Cabinet into its collection of legendary ARP synthesizers.

This 2508 cabinet was assembled as a complete self-contained 2500 synthesizer featuring original oscillator, filter, sequencer, envelope and mix-sequencer modules, all linked by the flexible 2500 patch matrix system. It also contains a new oscillator module designed and built for the Foundation by Phil Cirocco of CMS (Discrete Music Systems).

The ARP Foundation is launching an IndieGogo campaign to raise funds to complete the restoration of what will become the only publicly-accessible ARP 2500 synthesizer in the USA, and to bolster its ARPs For All Program in preparation for the 2500’s arrival.

View the Campaign!

About the Alan R. Pearlman Foundation:

The ARP Archives & The Alan R. Pearlman Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Its mission is to celebrate the legacy of inventor, musician, entrepreneur and engineer Alan R. Pearlman, by making his innovative inventions publicly accessible, and by inspiring future generations to imagine and create. Alan R. Pearlman was a pioneer in the electronic music world, and the founder of ARP Synthesizers, a leading synthesizer manufacturer in the 1970s. The Foundation is dedicated to preserving his legacy, and is committed to creating opportunities for emerging artists, sound designers and electronic music entrepreneurs.

Among their missions is enabling artists and designers to use rare, vintage ARP synthesizers, as well as recording and production equipment - which they’ve successfully accomplished with the ARPs For All Program in cooperation with their partners at The Record Co. in Boston, MA

---

Side note for synth history's sake: The New England Synthesizer Museum supposedly had the first ARP 2500 on display, but it was non functional when I visited, and the museum no longer around. The owner/curator David Hillel Wilson passed away back in 2010.

Yamaha CS-80 (synthetic ode to Elektrish studios)

video upload by ollilaboratories

"I have been in heaven, synth heaven... the Elektrish Vintage Synthesizer Studio & Museum. This is a place where in the future people in Sweden/Malmö can see/touch/play/record the synths and feel the vintage tolex smelling heat surge from a massive extremely well curated synthesizer and electronic instruments collection. Big hats off to Jörgen, the curator and owner of the museum.. i cant wait to see what the future holds for all the gear heads when they enter this holy ground.

About the piece, Yamaha CS-80, what can i say? The biggest and baddest of them all... the studio was so hot that i was literally fuming, lost track of time and managed to gain the signal a wee bit hot. But i dont care, this was so much fun and i want to share the joy with you call.

Top panel plays the main lead, bottom panel i am adding a fifth, sort of organ style sound, poly AT controlling vibrato on VCO and VCF, adjusting and mixing them a bit and also adjusting the attack on both for a smoother sound.

Played live in one take, EHX 720 stereo looper playing in reverse a plucky CS80 sound in the background, el capistan for delay and bigsky modulated room reverb. Thats it... and yeah, a hot signal too, so you all know what to expect.

Big Thanks to Jörgen for having me, i will come back soon. ps, I now smell like a vintage synth.. and i am completely fine with it. No shower for me for a while :)"

Roland SH-5 Vintage Analog Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Here is a Roland SH-5 monophonic analog synthesizer with multimode filter, recently serviced, ready to play and record. US voltage. All functions work, and it happily stays in tune rather well for a mid-70s analog synth.

Cosmetically, there are some scratches on the metal panels and on the tolex and on the end caps. It shows the expected wear of a 45-year old instrument, but no grievous signs of abuse or maltreatment. If you are looking for a minty museum piece, this is not the SH-5 for you. But if you are looking for a solidly working, playable SH-5, please continue, and see the photos for the best impression."

MOOG OPUS 3

via this auction

"Have you been searching for a very rare classic/vintage synthesizer? Well; here it is! One of the MOST BEAUTIFUL synthesizers ever built... Any angel you look at it, it is BREATH-TAKING; and screams late 70's... What makes this gem extra unique and special, is the condition that is in! It has been well preserved, and is in MINT CONDITION! This wonder is adored by all collectors, and will keep on going up in value... Needless to say, being in this condition, everything works perfectly as it was, when it rolled off the factory.

My wife inherited this from her grandfather. He was a very neat person, and a collector. So, it has been pampered all its life, barely played with, and mostly tucked away securely in the closet with the rest of the collectables (that we might make available for sale soon! Stay tuned...). I truly enjoy, and adore this magnificent synth, and really wish I could keep it, but the decision is not mine to make...

I am sure that if you are looking at this item, you know enough about it. But you can always Google it, and read all you need.

It is truly hard for us to part with it, and we hope this unique and rare beauty finds a good home, and stays in this condition, so one day, it may end up in a museum..."

STEINER-PARKER SYNTHACON - Analog Synth Demo

video upload by synth4ever

"Steiner-Parker Synthacon vintage analog synthesizer demo. This demo of the rare Synthacon mono synth from Steiner-Parker features various sounds and tweaking. Filmed at the Vintage Synthesizer Museum in Los Angeles, CA.

The Steiner Parker Synthacon is a rare monophonic analog synthesizer produced in 1975-1979. It features 3 VCOs, white & pink noise generator, sample & hold, portamento, 2-pole resonant lowpass/bandpass/highpass filter, 2 ADSR envelopes, trigger generator, 49 keys, and a ton of signal routing via numerous switches.

Only a few hundred Synthacon synthesizers were produced, according to designer Nyle Steiner. It's capable of nice sounds of course, but it excels at chaotic and crazy modulations, squelches, ring mod tones, noises and has an extremely potent filter with resonance. The legacy of the Steiner-Parker Synthacon's filter design lives on today in some modular synth designs as well as some Arturia products.

It was a lot of fun to try the Synthacon and tweak it, as all the switches make it very interactive for quick signal routing. If you have the opportunity to try one, don't pass it up!"

Note a new SYNTHACON is in the works.

KORG PS-3100 - Synth Demo

video upload by synth4ever

"Korg PS-3100 vintage polyphonic analog synthesizer demo. During a visit to the Vintage Synth Museum in LA, I had a chance to try the Korg PS-3100 analog synth. In this demo I briefly noodle and tweak some parameters to show some Korg PS-3100 sounds.

The Korg PS-3100 was released in 1977 and has 48-voices of polyphony via 12 divide-down oscillators. The Korg PS-3100 has 2 LFOs, Resonator, multiple envelopes, Ensemble effect, patchbay, 3-band EQ, 12 scaling controls for intonation control, 48 keys and CV/Gate connections.

The Korg PS-3100 is very rare as apparently only 600 were manufactured. It's successors the Korg PS-3200 and PS-3300 had even more capabilities. The sound is very rich and warm, and is excellent for nice brassy tones. Hope you enjoy the demo."

WALDORF WAVE - Synth Demo

video upload by synth4ever

"Waldorf Wave synth demo featuring various wavetable sounds, patches and presets. The Waldorf Wave is a huge and rare vintage wavetable synthesizer from 1993, and can create some incredible pads, soundscapes and crunchy sounds. This Waldorf Wave demo was filmed at the Vintage Synthesizer Museum in Los Angeles, September 2022.

The Waldorf Wave features digital wavetables, analog LPF and HPF filters, 16-48 voices of polyphony (depending on model), 61 keys with velocity and aftertouch, MIDI, and tons of buttons and knobs to tweak sounds to your liking.

The Waldorf Wave is a monster wavetable synthesizer in size and sound. As it is very rare and few were produced, it commands high prices on the second market. As an alternative, the Waldorf Microwave from 1989 is far more affordable.

I was lucky to have the chance to try this vintage Waldorf Wave during my visit to the Vintage Synth Museum and hope you enjoy the demo."

ACE TONE CANARY S-3 One of the few remaining units on the planet

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

This appears to be the same one listed back in September. You can find a small handful of posts mentioning the Canary here. "One of the very few remaining Ace Tone Canary S-3 on the planet. Despite being a 60 years old machine, this unit works like a charm and it's in spectacular cosmetic conditions -- it looks much better than the unit exhibited at the Roland Museum, actually.

History Designed and built by Ikutaro Kakehashi (founder of Ace Tone, Roland and Boss) in 1962 during the Pre-Roland era, the Ace Tone Canary S-3 is an early monophonic synthesizer inspired by the Clavioline, a forerunner to the analog synthesizer invented in 1947, but implementing several technical improvements and revisions that make it a unique instrument. In 1964, Ikutaro Kakehashi decided to take the Canary S-3 along to the NAMM show in Chicago but, despite receiving interest, he did not receive any distribution deals. So the Canary S-3 ended up being distributed in Japan only and quickly became a rare instrument even at that time.

Sound When you listen to this machine, the reason of that unsuccessful mission at NAMM quickly stands out: the sound of the Canary S-3 had nothing to do with 60's music, it was not a simulation of classical instruments. The Canary S-3 sound was quite agressive, warm and extremely rich in armonics, totally in line with nowadays electronic music standards and so far away from the 60's vibes. It's pure electricity generated by military-grade germanium transistor oscillators and filters, a machine that can easily be used as main/only instrument in modern music productions.

Germanium Instead of using a vacuum tube oscillator as the Clavioline, the Canary S-3 implements a solid state circuitry totally based on germanium transistors. Widely implemented in vintage guitar fuzzboxes and amplification and exceptionally in synthesizer circuitry (such as the VCA section of the EMS VCS3/Synthi A), these transistors have a warmth and a granulity as pleasant as the tube sound, without being the same. The sonic grain of germanium is generally a bit rougher than the tube grain, and radically less flat and plain than classic silicon transistors. -- As far as I know the Canary S-3 is the only synthesizer ever built using germanium transistors as sound generators.

Architecture The Canary S-3 can be organized in 3 main sections: Sound Generator - Tone Color - Controls. The Sound Generator features 4 parallel octave dividers that output super fat saw waveforms in 4 different octaves (Bass - Tenor - Alto - Soprano) ranging from F0 to F4. Then the resulting waveform is passed through a germanium filter bank that separates the input signal into 5 components, each one carrying a frequency sub-band of the original signal. The 5 bands (obtained using HP and LP filters) are controlled by 5 combinable switches under the Tone Control section (1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5). The mix of the 4 Sound Generators and the 5 Tone Colors delivers a total of 496 different settings/sounds ranging from fat basses to rich organ and raw lead sounds. In addition to the main sounds the Canary S-3 features also two noise generators controlled by two unusual momentary push buttons designed to perform abstract rhythms in real time. The sounds can be modified using the knobs and the bizarre knee lever designed to perform volume variations in real time. The Control Section includes also two knobs for (pitch) Vibrato Speed and Depth, the global Tuning knob (+/- 2 semitones) and a master Volume knob used also tu on/off the instrument. Lastly there is the Rhythm Volume knob to set the volume of the two noises.

The Ace Tone Canary S-3 is undoubtedly a one-of-a-kind instrument, an amazing piece of retro tecnology, an avant-garde machine born six decades ago that still has something exclusive and unique to say."
